I have always loved going to a Burlesque show for the pure fact that those involved always seem to ooze such confidence on stage. Their personalities are vibrant and enticing. Their costumes are always exquisite, the makeup on point and the acts comical, entertaining and always just that little bit (if not, a lot) steamy! ‘Hello Sugar’ did well to stand by this, bringing a lot of sizzle and pizzazz to the Ellington Jazz Club last night for their opening Fringe weekend.
‘Hello Sugar’ is a 2020 Fringe show brought to you by ‘Sugar Blue Burlesque’. ‘Sugar Blue’ is both a burlesque academy and performance troupe while also being one of the leaders in the Australian Burlesque Community today. ‘Dee Dee Luscious’ was the MC for the evening, engaging the audience early with her quick humour and wit. She was amusing and passionate draped in a gorgeous pink number with candy entwined throughout her hair (love that!) She kept the flow of the show at a high standard while ensuring we indulged in a few giggles along the way.
‘Lucy Lovegun’, ‘Penelope Pop’ and ‘Ruby Slippers’ were definitely my highlight picks for the afternoon! Bringing a whole lot of personality, energy and sex appeal, these women walked on stage and performed their hearts out! I absolutely fell in love with their costumes and makeup. The detail in both was impeccable! It was easy to see that ‘Lucy Lovegun’ has been doing burlesque for some time. She shines on stage throwing absolutely everything behind her performance. Her facial expressions are flawless and her style wild. You could not fault her performance one little bit.
‘Ruby Slippers’ was an absolute show stopper! With drag makeup that popped from stage, Ruby made dancing, shaking and jumping in high heels look like a piece of cake! Dynamic and animated Ruby did not sway from character. Having performed in front of a cheering audience of thousands at Adelaide Fringe it’s not hard to see why Ruby has performed across Aus. A burlesque super star indefinitely, Ruby does not come to play… she 100% comes to slay! Wowing the crowd at the end of her performance she downs an item that you wouldn’t expect… I will leave that one to your imagination.
‘Penelope Pop’ shook down the Ellington Jazz club with a shimmy like no other! Cute as a button, she owns the spotlight on stage, dancing up a storm like it’s nobody’s business! Charismatic and alluring ‘Penelope’ does well to keep the audience engaged throughout her performance. With a smile to die for, she’s bubbly and electric deserving every bit of applause she received!
‘Hello Sugar’ is an enjoyable afternoon of entertainment. If you love all things glitz and glamour. If you love creative dance routines with an amazing array of outfits and costumes then this is the fringe for you!
