Now I’m sure we are all well aware of the world of Tinder. There’s some swiping for likes, there’s some accidental swipes. ‘No when you meant Yes’ (goodbye possible love of your life) and of course, there’s a little bit of lingering too long over someone’s photo with their dog in it, because let’s be honest, how can you not swipe Yes to someone with a cute dog? Tinder dates are so 2018 – 2019 has brought us Timber Dates from Lumberpunks Perth and we couldn’t be more excited!
A bit more exciting than a normal Tinder Date, Timber Dates have you steering away from your normal mundane dinner and drinks choice and instead, have you challenging your date to a little axe throwing competition, 100% breaking the ice and guaranteeing you some definite laughs in the process!
Intrigued yet? I know I definitely was!
Having only opened their doors a few days ago (05th September 2019), Lumber Punks Axe – Throwing has finally landed in Perth after being an absolute hit over on the East Coast! Opening 7 days a week with 5 sessions daily, Lumberpunks Perth aims to establish and cultivate “The Sport of Axe Throwing” within Australia while hopefully generating a friendly, open and happy community surrounding it. Each axe throwing session is 1.5 hours long at $45.00 per person (session times start at 11am || 1pm || 3pm || 5pm || 7pm daily) and involves a full safety induction with training on Tactical Tomahawks and Estwing Hatchets before finishing off with competitive game play between groups / individuals on these two axes. If you have a group of 11+ the cost drops down to $40.00 each and if you have a group of 25 or more, it becomes $35 per person. There is no minimum group size and no deposit required with nightly walk in sessions accepted.
Well worth every cent for the experience you receive, believe me!
Now that you’ve got all the details to head along and try it for yourself, (honestly, 100% give it a go) I want to dive into more of what really makes ‘Lumber Punks’ what it is and what the owners; Sam and Tyson, are trying to achieve with introducing ‘Lumber Punks – Axe Throwing’ into Australia. Axe throwing is ALL INCLUSIVE and does not discriminate against anyone. Females versus males. Those with disabilities to those without. Young versus Old etc. Anyone and everyone can come on down to ‘Lumber Punks’ and give it a red hot go!
After talking to Tyson in depth, there seems to be a real misconception surrounding who CAN attend and participate in the axe – throwing. You may be surprised to know that there are actually more females than males that walk through the door, as well as some incredible 90+ year old souls (women and men) showing us just how it’s done and absolutely nailing a bullseye!
Axe- throwing is actually a game of smarts. Its mind over brawn, not who can throw the hardest and if you nail the technique then you’re well on your way to being a pretty decent axe – thrower! I mean I went once to Lumberpunks Perth, nailed a couple of bullseyes and I am fairly sure I am now a pro! Well… nearly…
You may be wondering how ‘Lumber Punks’ even came about? Having both worked in Hospitality Management for some time, Sam and Tyson were looking for something different in their futures, something they could hopefully call their own. The pair were having a “business meeting” in Tyson’s backyard where he had built a small target and bought some SOG Tactical Tomahawks when the lightbulb went off and as they say, the rest was history. From there, right in the middle of his backyard, ‘Lumber Punks’ was born! Thanks to their connection and love of music as well as their adoration and association with the word ‘Punks’, the name was created quite quickly. Lumber is an American timber term
but Punk is actually a timber/lumber term too as it originated in the Timber Yards. New apprentices were called ‘Punks’, after the broken and unusable off cuts of wood. Interesting right? Music also plays a massive part in the experience at ‘Lumber Punks’ with each session’s playlist being curated by the throwers themselves. That’s right, you get to choose the tunes you throw to! Pretty sweet added bonus if you ask me!
Overall, all I can say is definitely get down to East Perth and try your hand at the axe-throwing these guys offer! The ‘Lumber Punks’ crew are an extremely friendly and welcoming one. They are there to help you perfect your skill and show you a great time over a sport that we haven’t seen here before and one, that no doubt you will want to be a part of. I’ll 100% begoing back to get my ‘Pro’ status ASAP! Great work ‘Lumber Punk’s and welcome to theWest Coast!
