A powerhouse performance by eight incredibly talented women, ‘Disenchanted’ went above and beyond my expectations and had me hook, line and sinker for the full 70-minute performance! Written by ‘Dennis T. Giacino’ and directed by ‘Lorna Mackie’, this 2020 Disney gone sassy Fringe number wowed the audience, turning the original world of all things ‘picture perfect princesses, impeccably created bodies and happily ever afters into a posse of attitude filled heroines who are done with their glass slippers, not eating treats and chasing after prince’s. A dynamic cast with vocals to die for, ‘Disenchanted’ is sensational. Amusing and influential, it is Disney like you have never seen it; saucy and a little bit naughty!
‘Snow White’ played by ‘Cassie Skinner’ is a force to be reckoned with. She is as vivid as she is talented. Her vocals were out of this world, opera like and her performance was one of high calibre. She played her character to a T and had the audience captured from the moment she walked on stage. Done with poison apples and whistling while she works, Cassie’s scintillating persona is one to be applauded.
‘Cinderella’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ were witty and memorable. Played by ‘Georgia McGivern’ and ‘Imogen Rabbitte’ I was in fits of giggles at the Disney puns they brought to life. Their passion for performing and acting out their characters honestly couldn’t be faulted. Their vocals outstanding, in fact, all the women in this musical comedy were gifted with voices that really did have me believing they were the Disney princesses! They were as impressive as they were funny. They really brought the crowd and stages to life.
‘Delicia Cooper’ as ‘Tiana from Princess and the Frog’ absolutely brought it! Her performance had to be one of my favourites. All light and kind to begin with she flips the lip completely and brings a whole lot of ‘Beyoncé’ vibes to the stage! The whole ‘oh no she didn’t click’ runs through your mind as you applaud her exceptional performance. Animated and extremely enjoyable, I loved that (not only with Delicia’s performance) the whole show deals with some real-life issues in a comical and light-hearted way. Entertainment at its absolute best!
In all honesty, all the female actresses are to be commended for their performances; ‘Belle’ played by ‘Sharon Kiely’, ‘Little Mermaid & Rapunzel’ played by ‘Jess Lally’, ‘Mulan’ played by ‘Andrea Lim’ and ‘Pocahontas & Princess Jasmine’ played by ‘Therese Cruise.’ All these extremely gifted women did their characters proud bringing them to life in such a theatrical, enthusiastic and expressive way. ‘Jess Lally’ even took it a step further taking ‘Rapunzel’ back to her roots channelling a very well-done German accent. Their voices all divine, they should all be so proud of their performances as really there was nothing to be criticised or changed.
Turning the original fairy tales completely upside down and bringing them back to life with fierce rebellion and fun filled feminism, ‘Disenchanted’ is the take on ‘Walt’s’ pure ‘Disney’ stories we have all been waiting for! Well devilish and a 100% cheeky, you would be some serious ‘poor unfortunate souls’ if you did not get involved in this hilarious cabaret style number this Fringe season!
