On a quiet Monday night, something sexy was brewing at Fringe World.
Held in the beautiful Lotterywest De Parel Spiegeltent at The Woodside Pleasure Garden, Carousel is an immersive cabaret experience inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies (the theatrical revue popular in the 20s and 30s on Broadway for those playing at home.)
Featuring performance art, dance, tease, and drag from Tease Industries and Sugar Blue Burlesque, two of Perth’s top performing troupes, Carousel does well to combine the Ziegfeld style of yesteryear with a more modern interpretation.
With stunning costumes and headpieces, tasteful tease and show-stopping tunes, Carousel transports us to a world where the Follies never went away.
The hilarious MC, Veronica Jean Jones, or VJJ as she liked to be known, brought just the right amount of silly, smutty and sexy to the role, while the show girls (and boy) showed off their talents with tease, tap and some snappy acts. One act featuring some giant pink powder-puffs and a large helping of talcum powder was particularly adorable.
Mia Matthiessen stole the show with her incredible singing voice. Covering a range of classics from Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” to the Italian aria “Time To Say Goodbye”, Mia’s singing chops were more than impressive.
The Brisbane headliner Lila Luxx brought something extra special to the show with a jaw-dropping routine filled with dramatic lighting that complimented her gorgeous performance.
While the show was entertaining and lots of fun, a few of the immersive moments of the show were lost at the back of the room as the performers moved around the space, and the use of the strobe torches during one of the acts were a little bit much for the eyes.
All in all Carousel was a great show, the perfect viewing for a girl’s night out.
