Keeping it real in our City

Treat yo self!

By: Leah Worthington‎

I shouldn’t have to tell you how important it is to look after yourself. Take a step back from social media, log off on time at work (that report can be finished tomorrow) and take the time to look out for the most important person in your life… you!

I have rounded up the top 5 ways to look after your own health and wellbeing in the southern suburbs, because after all, if you can’t look after yourself properly, how can you possibly take care of anything/anyone else?

Run

Are you an avid runner, or maybe would just like to be? Did you know that there are timed 5km runs happening every weekend? Park Ruin is a world-wide organisation that holds timed 5km runs every weekend at parks across 14 countries! The aim of Park Run is not only to improve your fitness and PB’s, but also to connect with likeminded people and make some friends along the way.

There are three park runs happening every weekend in the southern suburbs in Bibra Lake (hyper link: http://www.parkrun.com.au/bibralake/), Canning River (hyperlink: http://www.parkrun.com.au/canningriver/) and Shelley (hyperlink: http://www.parkrun.com.au/shelley/). Park Run is free to participate in but you need to register, so they know how many people are heading along to each run. You don’t have to be the next Usain Bolt to participate either, the main emphasis of park runs is on fun, fitness and friendship, with a group coffee date happening after each run.

Sweat
Have you ever tried Bikram yoga? If you have, you know just how addictive this sweat-sesh can be! If not, then read on! Recently I checked out Hot For Yoga, Perth’s newest and cutest Bikram yoga joint located in Jandakot. The studio is run by Holly and Daniel with Holly leading the classes, having had instructed yoga for two and a half years. They pride themselves on running a welcoming and inclusive studio and want everyone who comes in to immediately feel like they belong and can be their best selves. Holly instructed the class I took part in and it was the best Bikram yoga class I have been too- it’s easy to get caught up in the “seriousness” of yoga but Holly kept it light and fun, plus she remembered everyone’s name!

The studio itself is tucked away in an industrial looking area of Jandakot but when you walk inside it is really funky and modern, with polished concrete, exposed bricks, hanging plants and even a cool graffiti piece adorning the walls. If you want to head along to a class, they are currently running an introductory special, where you can get 25 days UNLIMITED yoga for just $39.
Hot For Yoga is located at 4/18 Biscayne Way, Jandakot and you can visit www.hotforyoga.com.au for more information on the benefits of Bikram yoga!

Eat

Now that you’ve worked up your appetite after all that running and sweating, I bet you are after something tasty, right? The Organic Circle is a boutique café and organic wholefoods store located in Armadale and is a bit of a mecca for people who want to treat their taste buds in an ethical and sustainable way. This place is the perfect spot to treat yourself without undoing all your hard work, plus it’s even more guilt free because everything in the café is 100% organic and unprocessed and made on the premises. They cater to all diets including vegetarian, vegan, paleo and gluten free and all of their food is sourced from local markets and suppliers throughout Perth. Their store stocks a wide range of organic products including fruit and veggies, meat, bread and other groceries, plus gluten free, raw and paleo food products, teas and drinks, cleaning products, gifts and heaps more!

The Organic Circle is located at Shop 1, Pioneer Village, 7 Albany Hwy, Armadale or you can visit their website www.theorganiccircle.com.au

Float

Would you believe me if I told you I had found the most relaxing place on earth… and it was located in Cockburn? No? Well then you have obviously never been to the Life Spring Float! Float places are popping up all over Perth and once I found out about a new one right around the corner from my place, I knew I had to check it out! Floating is heralded as THE way to relax, rejuvenate and restore your physical, emotional and mental states and I have to agree! Taking the time to do nothing but relax as you float in their specially designed ‘pods’ is an amazing way to de-stress.

The centre itself is a bit of a hidden oasis, located in the LIA area of Cockburn, but once you are inside you feel instantly relaxed thanks to the aromatherapy, mood lighting and soft music, helping you get ready for a totally relaxing experience. The staff at The Life Spring are very accommodating and helpful, they really want to make sure that you are getting the best possible float experience you can! After your float, if you aren’t quite ready to re-enter the stressful world outside you can chill out with some spring water or herbal tea.

Play

How could I get through a blog about wellness and community without mentioning the brand-spanking new City of Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre!? The Cockburn ARC opened on 22nd of May and offers 9 water areas, 3 waterslides, a 6 court stadium, 3 group fitness studios and a huge health club space. They also have a social spot program with basketball, netball, futsal and junior sports comps, as well as crèche and an indoor play centre for the little ‘uns.
Located at 31 Veterans Parade, Cockburn Central there are membership options to suit everyone, or of course you can get day entry passes. Make sure you check it out soon!

As always if you check out any of my recommendations, I’d love to hear about it! Make sure to tag #perthhappenings in all of your southern suburbs adventures!
