Keeping it real in our City

The Queen’s Baton Relay 2018 – The WA Edition!

The Queen’s Baton Relay 2018 – The WA Edition!

There is nothing we Aussies love more than getting behind our local sporting heroes and champions. You only have to look around at the sea of purple, white, blue and yellow at any AFL game. Or when the stadium lights up in Scorcher orange. We love any chance to show our colours. So it’s no surprise than when Queensland was named the home for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, we got excited!

The Queen’s Baton Relay has been a tradition associated with the Commonwealth Games since 1958 and holds a special place in the opening ceremony of the games. Holding a message written by the Queen herself, which will be read aloud at the opening ceremony, each baton is designed to reflect the home of that year’s games. The baton’s design is not only chosen to reflect this great nation of ours, but also our cultural values and is used to inspire one another to come together.

The Queen’s Baton Relay travels through all the nations and territories of the Commonwealth over 388 days!! Naturally, it makes an appearance here, in our fine state of WA. Travelling up through Albany, Manjimup and Bunbury before appearing in Rottnest and then Perth, the Baton Relay can be seen no matter where you are. So in honour of the Games and the tradition of bringing our people together, here is your Guide to seeing the Queen’s Baton Relay and all of the wonderful celebrations that come with it.
