Take the Plunge! Your Guide to the 2018 Avon Descent


If you’ve never heard of the Avon Descent before then you are in for one hell of a treat! Did you know that the Avon Valley is the home to WA’s premier white-water race? With over 35,000 competitors competing over the last 44 years, from paddle to speed boats. This is a gruelling event that tests even the toughest of athletes! But you don’t need to be a keen boater to enjoy this weekend full of festivities! From markets, parades, family activities and food festivals this is a weekend not to be missed! So get planning now and check out my guide to the 2018 Avon Descent to ensure you make the most of this beautiful part of the state.



Avon River Festival
When: Friday August 3rd from 4pm onwards
Where: Minson Ave, Northam
This is where the Avon Descent race starts bright early Saturday morning. But be sure to get into town the day before and enjoy the festivities of the Avon River Festival. Held on the banks of the Avon River this night of fun is perfect for everyone in the family. With a selection of market stalls, live music, street food and of course sideshow alley with rides, games and a street parade! Be sure to hang around for the largest show of fireworks in the Avon Valley to bring the night to an end. Head back to the start line come Saturday morning to see the competitors off! This is the beginning of a 2 day, 124 gruelling km race! Now hop in the car and drive the 20 minutes to picturesque Toodyay!

Toodyay International Food Festival
When: Saturday August 4th from 10am – 4pm
Where: Stirling and Duidgee Park, Toodyay
Having a town built around the Avon River means you are perfectly situated to enjoy every aspect of this iconic race! Whether you choose to wander the main street or sit down at the river banks you won’t miss a moment of the action. But it’s not just the boats you’ll want to see here either! Head down to Duidgee and Stirling Park, both sitting right against the river, and enjoy the fantastic International Food Festival. With food from all over the world, plus a selection of excellent local businesses, wine, beer and cider, there is no doubt you’ll find something to tempt your taste buds. The kids won’t miss out either, with free bouncy castles, face painting and balloon twisting!

Whilst the race stops overnight you can head back to Perth to catch up on the next leg of the race!

Avon Descent Festival Markets
When: Sunday August 5th from 10am – 3pm
Where: Lilac Hill Park, Caversham
In it’s second year the Vintage Collective Markets have joined forced to bring you a prime day and real estate to enjoy the race! Head along and watch the competitors blast past you all the while enjoying a gorgeous market with a huge selection of wares, tasty food trucks, plenty of giveaways and cooking demonstrations! Throw in a huge program of fantastic live entertainment and you won’t want to move form your spot!

Belmont Avon Descent Family Fun Day
When: Sunday August 5th from 11.30am to 3pm
Where: Garvey Park, Ascot
Cheer the speed boats on towards the finish line from this perfect vantage point on the banks of the Swan River. The City of Belmont’s FREE family fun day is the perfect way to spend the day with live race commentary, free children’s entertainment and more. If you’re a City of Belmont resident, be sure to bring along your Opportunity Card to take advantage of the free and discount offers during the day!

Avon Descent Finish Line Family Day
When: Sunday August 5th from 11am – 5pm
Where: Riverside Gardens, Bayswater
The perfect finish to a perfect weekend! Come on down and really help bring the competitors across the line, along with the support crews and families. Nothing quite beats an exciting finish, so there’ll be plenty of live commentary to keep you up to date. Plus heaps for the family with FREE bouncy castles, children’s rides and face painting.
